Last month, there were vicious tornados in the Birmingham area that killed many people and destroyed thousands of homes and buildings. One house had a little dog that had a habit of crawling into the open clothes dryer and napping on the warm clothes. During the tornado, the dog couldn't be found, and the house was totally destroyed. The family assumed that their dog was ...

Mr. Wendel Howell

Mom: Emily

Mr Wendel’s mom says: “Mr. Wendel,” Wendel Howell, is a puppy mill rescue from Nebraska. His puppy mill was particularly awful and run down.  He has one eye that never fully developed, due to a puncture wound and infection that he sustained at the mill, and he is completely blind in that eye. His other eye is too big for his eyelid area, so he is unable to close that eye and has to leave it open all day and night, even while he is sleeping!  We took him to a specialist to discuss the issue, and she told us that we had to get his surgery within a year because he had a lot of corneal pigmentation that made his eye open too much and that he would become completely blind.  We are now trying to hold fundraisers to get enough money to get this eye surgery (canthoplasty), but it has been really difficult. Mr. Wendel is a very happy boy and loves running and playing with other dogs (especially the ladies LOL), and chewing up everything that he can get his teeth on, such as his daddy, durable squeak toys, chews, and his brother Mo Mo.”

3rd Place Winner

Prize: Exclusive (DOG)SPIRED apparel and an assortment of gifts found here.

Shiley

Mom: Holly

Shiley’s mom says: “Shiley has been in our family since she was six-weeks old. She is our best friend and is always there for us. She has a smile that is contagious. Shiley loves to cuddle up with anyone, gives kisses on command, and enjoys the occasional vanilla ice cream cone. She loves getting massages from her mommy. She “works” as her daddy’s “office manager” in our home office. She is very much attached to her stuffed animal companion, “Bob,” and takes him everywhere she goes (much like a security blanket). Shiley was named after an Arctic Wolf that my husband John photographed when he was in graduate school in Montana.”

6th Place Winner

Prize: Exclusive (DOG)SPIRED apparel and an assortment of gifts found here.

Maddie

Mom: Ann

Maddie’s  mom says: “Maddie is a rescued APBT. She has made me such a better person, as well as a better dog trainer. His favorite place is snuggled up in a PitBall right next to me on the couch.

Shown here is my favorite winter photo of Maddie.

7th Place Winner

Prize: Exclusive (DOG)SPIRED apparel and an assortment of gifts found here.

Abbey

Mom: Debbie

Abbey’s  mom says: “Abbey is a nine-week old Staffy that was rescued from Heard County Animal Shelter just hours before she was going to be put down. How could you not just love that face?”

8th Place Winner

Prize: Exclusive (DOG)SPIRED apparel and an assortment of gifts found here.

Bartholomew Samson Mozart (Bart)

Mom: Linda

Bart’s mom says: “Bart came from a litter of five boys. He was the first born, and was dropped by his mother by the front door as a still born. Thankfully, the people who were in care of his mom knew how to get him back to life. Soon after, when he was about five-weeks old, his mom started to push him away, not caring for him. Just under six weeks, I took him home. It wasn’t long after that he began to have health problems, such as worms, vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss (Parvo was suspected). Quickly after getting him treatment, I noticed that the medication wasn’t working. Time after time, I brough him back to the vet. Finally, after close to $1000 later, he started to get better. But then came the abusive relationship with my now ex-husband.  He kept telling me that he was going to take Bart out to be shot, and he lied to the Humane Society, saying that Bart had bitten his kids, when in fact Bart protected them from him. Now he is 105-110 pounds and happy, but is still scarred from the experience, though he is getting much better. I love my dog more than anyone.
