Cocaine Found in Greyhounds

“The cocaine levels found in the dogs are so small they could’ve come from anywhere,” William Lambert, the head of the Jacksonville-based Greyhound Owners Association stated to CBS 4. In all my years around dogs, I don’t recall seeing canines buying drugs or doing drugs, so my question is: “How did the Greyhounds get the cocaine into their system?”

When I read about two Greyhounds testing positive for cocaine on People.com I was shocked and disgusted by the news. Dog racing is barbaric and cruel. The fact that these Greyhounds tested positive for cocaine is another reason why dog racing should not exist. Cocaine is harmful and dangerous to humans, what is it doing to these dogs? Wouldn’t this fall under animal cruelty?

Six years ago a widespread testing found over a 100 dogs testing positive and there was no mention in the report of these racing establishments being shut down. Greed to win a stupid race and gamble money that could be spent on helping rescue shelters is fueling the ignorance that cocaine will make the Greyhounds run faster. It will definitely kill the dogs faster! Hopefully, Grey2K USA will succeed in ending Greyhound racing.

    Hi Kelli,

What's it like writing a piece when you have no idea about what you're talking about? It's not like the trainers in question cut a line of coke for the dogs and lined 'em up. Fact of the matter is, the amount found in the tests was infantesimal. I'll bet your mortgage you'll find a higher concentration of cocaine on any dollar bill in your purse; that's how prevalent the drug has become in our society. The only way to make a racer faster is to take care of it. Good food, lots of rest and plenty of TLC is what makes the dog faster… not drugs.

So ironic you should speak of ignorance when your 'story' is laced with it.

    Have a great day!

    Hi Kelli -

You are absolutely right – dog racing is cruel and inhumane. Positive drug tests are just another part of why it should end.

In addition to these dogs at Jacksonville Kennel Club, two greyhounds recently tested positive at Alabama tracks (http://jenkrebs.blogspot.com/2010/05/two-greyho…) and one at Palm Beach Kennel Club (http://jenkrebs.blogspot.com/2010/06/cocaine-po…). In the latter, the reporter was told by the Florida DBPR that 170 drug-positive cases had been opened this fiscal year.

Whether it is due to purposeful administration in an effort to fix races, or if it's tranferrance from the individuals handling the dogs, it is inexcusable.

Clearly, this is an industry that places profits above the health and welfare of greyhounds.

Thank you for covering this important story, and for referencing GREY2K USA. We will continue to fight until every dog track in the U.S. is closed.

    Sincerely,

    Jen Krebs

    Christopher,

Anyone that thinks even a infinitesimal amount of cocaine in a dog that tests positive is a moron and does not deserve to care for dogs – this is the fact of the matter! Obviously you don't know what it is like to own, train, or care for a pet, especially a dog!

Awesome… my post being “edited by 'moderator'”… that usually happens when people don't want the truth, even as simple as it is… to be brought to light. Though Kreb's post is littered with propaganda and misleading information intent on tugging at emotions rather than rational thought, it's posted in it's entirety. Must be nice to have your drivel posted w/o concern of it being 'moderated'.

As far as people hiding behind monikers, you have no credibility. Even furthered by your assertions that I neither own, train or care for dogs. Time to take your blinders off, toots, and stop feeding at the Grey$K trough.

Christopher, perhaps you might learn how to express your opinion and weigh in on a topic without name calling and personal attacks.

The facts about dog racing speak for themselves: http://grey2kusa.org/racing/sheets.html

The information in the injury reports comes directly from the state racing commissions in response to public records requests, and the information in the fact sheets come directly from industry records and information.
