Remember all the Dog Mom’s out there this Mother’s Day!

With Mother’s Day coming up, I’m reminded of all the tired little mother dogs who come through my shelter. Some are abandoned by owners simply because they had puppies. Some are strays struggling to find shelter and enough food to keep their little family alive. Life for these mothers is not easy. Their special nutritional needs are not met, leaving them malnourished and tired. With puppies climbing all over them they have to scrounge for food in garbage, find shelter in bad weather, dodge traffic, and watch out for other animals and cruel people who have no sympathy for a mother dog and her babies. The puppies, with immature immune systems, sometimes suffer and die from preventable diseases. Overfilled shelters find it difficult to take in entire litters. This Mother’s Day, please remember all the homeless dog mothers out there and spread the word about spay and neuter.

Dog, goat inseparable friends

An odd couple from Virginia is inseparable. Even when the law came to pick up one of them, the other one decided to go to.

The cages at the Bristol, Virginia animal shelter are filled with dogs for the most part.

That is until about a week and a half ago when a dog and goat were picked up.

“I looked out my

window and saw a goat and a dog walking down the street,” said Loretta Smith, who found the pair.

The animals found their way to Smith’s house in a Bristol neighborhood far from any goats.

“They stayed right together, and after the dog ate, the goat he laid down beside him then he got up and started eating the flowers then decided to walk over and dance on top of the car. It was so funny,” said Smith.

She said she has never seen the pair before and called animal control.

When animal control officers arrived on the scene, they only planned on taking the dog with them, but the goat had a different idea. That’s when officers realized the bond between this odd couple.

“She started to take the dog away, and I say ‘You’ll probably have to take the goat because he’s going to go with you,’ and he just trotted out through there and went to the truck,” said Smith.

“At that time, she decided to go ahead and transport both together. It w

as apparent they weren’t going to leave each other and that’s how they ended up here,” said Deena Bouton with the Bristol Animal Control.

The pair, now called “Thelma and Louise” are at the Bristol Virginia Animal Shelter where their bond is still going strong.

“If you take Louise out of the cage, Thelma, she had a fit,” said Bouton.

Officers hope to keep them together because the two are so attached to one another.

“Our hope is that the owner will come forward, and they can go back home. If that doesn’t happen, then we hope to adopt them out together,” said Bouton.

They’ll be up for adoption on Friday and hopefully heading to a new home together.

Dogs have feelings too, and are perhaps more in tune with the natural forces than humans. So why shouldn't the potent influence of the celestial forces have just as much impact on their furry little lives? Most of the symbols of astrology are based on animals anyway. If you need proof, just watch your dog's behavior around the full moon. They often feel it even more ...
