How to Get Your Dog in Shape
Whether you have a Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Siberian Husky, or a Pug, keeping your dog in shape is one of the best things that you can do for them. Staying healthy and fit is just as important for a dog as it is for a human. Overweight dogs tend to have physical health problems, depression, and an overall lack of energy.
There are many things that you can do that will help your dogs’ well being, and they only require a little effort on your part–some free time.
- First, make sure to feed your dog a healthy and well-balanced diet. Most dogs only need to be fed once or twice a day, depending on the size of dog and breed. Ask your vet what type of food is right for your dog.Make sure not to feed your dog scraps from the table, as this is often the cause of weight gain in dogs.
Keep your dog hydrated. He should have several bowls of water a day, especially if he has been very active.
- Next, exercise your dog! You and your pet can go for a run, a walk, play ball, go for a swim, or even play Frisbee. Playing around is what dogs love to do. Be happy knowing that your dog is happy and at the same time being healthy. An added benefit to playing with your dog is that you might start shedding some pounds as well.
- Last, monitor your dog’s weight on a bi-weekly schedule. By doing this, you will be able to adjust his diet anytime you see a sudden spike or drop in weight and his overall health demeanor. Try to keep your dog at a set weight, and make small adjustments to achieve this goal.
