Pc Mark Johnson was also ordered to pay £2,500 towards the RSPCA’s costs after he was convicted of unnecessarily confining his dogs “in an environment that was detrimental to their well-being.” But he was not disqualified from keeping animals and still looks after a black Labrador sniffer dog called Dash, that is trained to find explosives.

During his day-long trial, Nottingham Magistrates’ Court heard Johnson arrived at work with 18-month-old Jay-Jay and Jet, seven, as well as Dash on June 30, one of the hottest days of last year.

Johnson put Dash in the kennels and planned to move Jay-Jay and Jet into an air-conditioned police car.

But he got distracted and set about attending meetings and completing paperwork at Nottinghamshire Police’s headquarters in Arnold, just north of the city.

Faced with the angry pooch, the gunman shot him and ran off without harming any of the Patels. Luckily, this furry hero is making a full recovery!

I have calculated for my oldest dog Emma, who is 13 1/2, the amount of times I have done things with her and for her. My apologies to my other two dogs; you’ll be featured in another missive, I’m sure.

Let Emma in and out (a modest estimate of 4 times per day) = 19,710 times.

Feeding Emma = 4,927 times.

Patting her/scratching behind her ears (a very modest 15 times per day) = 73,912 times.

Hugging Emma (again, a very modest 3 times per day) =14,782 times.

Refilling/cleaning her water bowl (3 times per day) = 14,782 times.

Taking Emma for a walk (sometimes 2 times per day, but calculating for once a day, one mile each time) = 4,927.5 miles.

Having Emma snuggle behind my knees or by my side in bed every night (minus two months each summer when it’s too hot and she sleeps on the floor by the window or out in the living room on the couch) = 4,117.5 times.

Amount of miles I have traveled with her, while moving or going on car trips = too many to count!

Amount of times I have looked over at Emma and thought I was the luckiest person in the world for having known her =100,000,000 times (a modest estimate).
